IELTS & TOEFL Exam Pattern

IELTS Exam Pattern (Academic & General Training)

The IELTS exam is divided into four sections:

  • 1. Listening (30 minutes)
    • 4 sections, 40 questions
    • Conversations and monologues with increasing difficulty

  • 2. Reading (60 minutes)
    • Academic IELTS: 3 long passages from books, journals, and newspapers
    • General IELTS: Extracts from advertisements, official documents, and newspapers

  • 3. Writing (60 minutes)
    • Task 1: Graph/diagram explanation (Academic) OR Letter writing (General)
    • Task 2: Essay writing (Both versions)

  • 4. Speaking (11–14 minutes)
    • Part 1: Introduction and general questions
    • Part 2: Cue card topic (2-minute speech)
    • Part 3: Discussion on abstract ideas related to the cue card topic

Scoring: Band score from 0 to 9 (each section is weighted equally).

TOEFL Exam Pattern (Internet-Based Test – iBT)

The TOEFL iBT assesses academic English skills and is divided into four sections:

  • 1. Reading (35–36 minutes)
    • 20 questions based on 3–4 academic passages
    • Multiple-choice, vocabulary, and inference questions

  • 2. Listening (36 minutes)
    • 28 questions from classroom discussions, conversations, and lectures

  • 3. Speaking (16 minutes)
    • 4 tasks (independent and integrated responses)
    • Speaking into a microphone (AI and human scoring)

  • 4. Writing (29 minutes)
    • Task 1: Summarize a reading passage and lecture
    • Task 2: Write an essay based on an opinion or argument

Scoring: Each section is scored out of 30, total score 0–120.
